| − | + | JAISALMER: Deafening explosions rent the air at the Chandhan firing range near Jaisalmer as the Indian Air Force displayed its combative power through its latest range of fighter aircraft, attack helicopters and transport planes as part of the war games christened 'Iron Fist'.<br><br>The entire area literally turned into a war zone as missiles and explosives were dropped on dummy terrorist camps and helicopters carrying out rescue operations. For the IAF, it was the first biggest showcase of its potential and deployment capabilities of aerial weapons.<br><br>President Pranab Mukherjee along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, defence minister A K Antony, minister of state for defence Jitendra Singh, chiefs of the three armed forces, Rajasthan governor Margaret Alva, chief minister Ashok Gehlot, delegates from 64 friendly countries, MP Murli Manohar Joshi, former defence minister Jaswant Singh witnessed the mammoth exercise on its inaugural day.<br><br>The event began with three Mi8 helicopters giving salute to the supreme commander of the armed forces and President Pranab Mukherjee.<br><br>'Iron Fist' was conceived as a visible demonstration of not only the deterrent and joint war fighting capabilities of the IAF but also a reaffirmation of the force's commitment to nation building through its more benign and non-kinetic capabilities.<br><br>Showcasing more than 30 types of platforms and weapons systems amounting to a participation of about 230 aircraft, the fire power display demonstrated day, dusk and night employability of air power by frontline fighter aircraft of the IAF, including Su-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, Jaguar, MiG-21,MiG-27, MiG-29 and Hawks. Transport aircraft C130J, AN-32, Embraer, IL-76, attack helicopters Mi-8, Mi-17 1V, newly inducted Mi-17 V5 and Mi-35 constituted the rotary wing ingredients. Indigenously developed Tejas was also displayed for the first time.<br><br>The events at - Iron Fist intend to display various aspects of Fire Power like- Air Defence Operations, Counter Surface Force Operations, Urban Warfare, Combat Search Rescue Operations, Assault Approach and Landing, Combat Offloading and Short Take off by C-130 J at the Landing Strip prepared at the Range<br><br>NSG commandoes jumping from helicopters destroyed the terrorist camp and rscued the people.<br><br>The Sarang Helicopter Aerobatic Display Team and low level aerobatics by SU-30 aircraft was an attraction of the event.<br><br>The fighter planes took off from around dozen airports from India including Uttarlai, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Agra, Meerut, Gwalior, Pune etc.<br><br>The IAF showcased for the first time, its Surface to Air Missile Systems like the shoulder fired IGLA, the vehicle mounted and mobile OSA-AK M and the longer range PECHORA. The exercise displayed its latest acquisition the Pilatus PC-7 Mk II basic trainer aircraft and Bambi Bucket Operations by Mi-17 V5 helicopter.<br><br>Being a display of armament delivery skills by pilots at the end of their training year, this year, for the first time, trainee pilots displayed their armament delivery skills flying the Hawk Aircraft. Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), two of the most prestigious indigenous projects was also part of the display.
