KANPUR: HAL Transport Division (TAD) had exceeded its production target during year 2012-13. It has completed production of seven new HAL-DO-228 multi-role utility aircraft along with repair and overhaul of HS-748 Avros, AN-32, Dorniers and other equipment.

General manager D Balasubramaiam said that production also included handing over of a HAL-D0-228 maritime surveillance aircraft to Seychelles, which is planning to utilise this aircraft for guarding its long coastline. Initial operation and maintenance will be supported by a team from TAD positioned at the customer's end.

He said that HAL-DO-228 has been configured for variety of roles such as regional airliner, air taxi, transport, maritime surveillance, intelligence warfare, troop transport and para-jumping. Owing to these features, this aircraft is the proven workhouse of Indian Air Force, Coast Guard and Navy. He added that National Coast Guard of Mauritius also utilises two HAL supplied DO-228s for surveillance of its coastline and VIP transport aircraft.

HAL-20-228 production was launched with Vayudoot, the first regional airlines of the country. He said that regional air routes in the country are now again poised for growth. HAL-20-228 is the ideal candidate for regional applications, supported by previous experience, availability and maintenance infrastructure within country.

"To keep the aircraft contemporary with latest technology developments, HAL continuously strives through its strong research and base design, to develop and integrate new modifications. The cockpit is being reconstructed with fully digital glass one and displayed during Aero India in February this year in Bangalore. Several other modifications like digital auto-pilot and upgraded avionics are also on the cards," Balasubramaniam added.

Chief manager Ram Awtar said that the division is also engaged in production of Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT). The HAL designed aircraft are set to replace aging Kiran jet trainers. The contract for manufacture and supply of 73 IJT aircraft had been signed, the first batch is likely to be completed during the forthcoming year. Limited series production of the aircraft is progressing at Bangalore with team deputed from Kanpur, the GM further.

He said that the elaborate airframe manufacturing and assembly infrastructure at Kanpur, coupled with systems expertise at other sister divisions, are under modernization to undertake production requirements like multi-role transport and regional transport aircraft.

"With the current and upcoming new projects, TAD is set to soar to new heights and soon become a civil aircraft manufacturer with all support services under one umbrella. Maintenance, repair and overhaul of bigger and overhaul of bigger aircraft is also being evaluated. Kanpur is gradually developing into a new centre for civil aviation in the country," he said.
