London 2012: How sponsors cashed in on golden opportunity

I can't see myself flaunting it in a bikini any time soon and that self-consciousness frustrates me. Each one a miracle, each one a blessing, but each has taken their toll on my body. I have three beautiful boys, three children I was told at 19 I would never have.

His policies have not helped create jobs; they have depressed them. And this I can tell you about where President Obama would take America: His plan to raise taxes on small business won't add jobs, it will eliminate them; his assault on coal and gas and oil will send energy and manufacturing jobs to China; his trillion dollar cuts to our military will eliminate hundreds of thousands of jobs, and also put our security at greater risk; his $716 billion cut to Medicare to finance Obamacare will both hurt today's seniors, and depress innovation - and jobs - in medicine.

My dad had been born in Mexico and his family had to leave during the Mexican revolution. That's how I was brought up. I grew up with stories of his family being fed by the US government as war refugees. My dad never made it through college and apprenticed as a lath and plaster carpenter.

In our best days, we can feel the vibrancy of America's communities, large and small. It's when our son or daughter calls from college to talk about which job offer they should take, and you try not to choke up when you hear that the one they like is not far from home. It's when we go to work in the morning and see everybody else on our block doing the same. That is the bedrock of what makes America, America.
It's when we see that new business opening up downtown.

You did it because you're an American and you don't quit. You did it because it was what you had to do.
But driving home late from that second job, or standing there watching the gas pump hit 50 dollars and still going, when the realtor told you that to sell your house you'd have to take a big loss, in those moments you knew that this just wasn't right. But what could you do? You did it because your family depended on you.

President Obama has thrown allies like Israel under the bus, even as he has relaxed sanctions on Castro's Cuba. He abandoned our friends in Poland by walking away from our missile defence commitments, but is eager to give Russia's President Putin the flexibility he desires, after the election.
Under my administration, our friends will see more loyalty, and Mr Putin will see a little less flexibility and more backbone.

Every American was relieved the day President Obama gave the order, and Seal Team Six took out Osama Bin Laden. America, he said, had dictated to other nations. President Obama began with an apology tour. No, Mr President, America has freed other nations from dictators.
But on another front, every American is less secure today because he has failed to slow Iran's nuclear threat. In his first TV interview as president, he said we should talk to Iran. We're still talking, and Iran's centrifuges are still spinning. I will begin my presidency with a jobs tour.

Business and growing jobs is about taking risk, sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding, but always striving. That's what this president doesn't seem to understand. Steve Jobs was fired at Apple. It's the genius of the American free enterprise system - to harness the extraordinary creativity and talent and industry of the American people with a system that is dedicated to creating tomorrow's prosperity rather than trying to redistribute today's.
He came back and changed the world. Usually, it doesn't work out exactly as you might have imagined.

I had to travel a lot for my job then and I'd call and try to offer support. But every mom knows that doesn't help get the homework done or the kids out the door to school. Five boys, with our families a long way away. Well, every mom and dad knows the answer to that.
Those days were toughest on Ann, of course.

The soles of Neil Armstrong's boots on the moon made permanent impressions on our souls and in our national psyche. Like all Americans we went to bed that night knowing we lived in the greatest country in the history of the world. When President Kennedy challenged Americans to go to the moon, the question wasn't whether we'd get there, it was only when we'd get there. Ann and I watched those steps together on her parent's sofa. To be an American was to assume that all things were possible.

The president has disappointed America because he hasn't led America in the right direction. You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him. He had almost no experience working in a business.
The president hasn't disappointed you because he wanted to. He took office without the basic qualification that most Americans have and one that was essential to his task.

Except work harder, do with less, try to stay optimistic. But his promises gave way to disappointment and division. Hug your kids a little longer; maybe spend a little more time praying that tomorrow would be a better day. I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed. Now is the moment when we can do something.
This isn't something we have to accept. With your help we will do something. That president was not the choice of our party but Americans always come together after elections. But Paul, I still like the playlist on my iPod better than yours.
Four years ago, I know that many Americans felt a fresh excitement about the possibilities of a new president. We are a good and generous people who are united by so much more than what divides us.

No amount of exercise or magic creams could get rid of the hanging flesh. I enquired about surgery but the cost was phenomenal and completely out of my reach. End Quote When I had my first daughter I was horrified by the state my body had been left in, so much so that i used to fantasise about getting hold of the "spare flesh" and cutting it off.

Looking at all those clips, you know, the hairdos and the freaky platform shoes, it's like a home-movie nightmare that just won't end, and all of these people sitting here at these tables, they're my family of sorts, you know. Executives, producers, the directors, my fellow actors out there. We've giggled through love scenes, we've punched and cried and spit and vomited and blown snot all over one another - and those are just the co-stars I liked.

I felt like a fish out of water in a body that didn't feel like my own. I felt like a whale for ages afterwards and my breasts were like Zeppelins, I hated them.
For about three years I felt utterly undesirable, and as a single mother I felt for a while (maybe about three years) that I would never be sexually attractive enough to find another partner. I suffered from an awful, disfiguring itchy rash all over my neck and chest about six months after the birth, which the doctor never properly diagnosed but vaguely said was to do with hormonal changes. It looked different, felt different, and was doing a whole lot of things that I didn't understand.

And unlike the President, I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs. Where no senior fears for the security of their retirement. An America where every parent knows that their child will get an education that leads them to a good job and a bright horizon.

I started suffering from anxiety around eight months after the birth, which caused a lot of fairly severe physical symptoms for about a year and came back in episodes for the next two years. The anxiety reinforced my sense of not being in my own body. My son is now four and a half, about to start school, and I only have felt truly back in my own body again for about six months. It wasn't forever, though. Sometimes I felt like...
my body would feel alien to me, forever. I started dating again, and have now been in a stable relationship since March.

I have taken up rock climbing and am now doing things with my body that I didn't think I would ever do again, and loving it.
Sam Watkins, Worthing, UK I'm sure that some women feel more comfortable with their bodies after pregnancy than I did, but this was my experience, and your article suddenly brought this home to me.

My body image totally destroyed any confidence I had, I had become a single parent-to-be when I was five months pregnant and as far as I was concerned I was now repulsive, and could never inflict my disgusting body on anyone else. Things have changed a lot, I am with a lovely partner, I have had another daughter, I have put on weight, so have filled out the flesh a bit, and both of my daughters love my "soft tummy".

I've always tried not to care about how I look, but I care what other people think about how I look. I don't want to be regarded with pity, I don't want to look down and see my scars as a negative thing because society tells me I should. I don't feel I can wear tight clothes because my belly doesn't sit flat any longer, and thin skin feels unpleasant to the touch, fragile, delicate even.

Now, facing infertility due to a disease, I'm grateful for the scars and stretched skin... I'm grateful for that reminder every time I look in the mirror.
What blessing could top that? of growing that beautiful baby and keeping her healthy and giving birth to her. What scar could steal that joy? I once had the honour of bearing a child in my womb...

But after my second child at age 37, I've never been able to regain it and my tummy is a big flabby bump still, now nearly two years later. Julia, Newport
Rebecca Mildren in 2007 before her first of two pregnancies (l) and in 2013 After my first child at age 34, I managed - albeit briefly - to regain my pre-pregnancy weight. The grim reality for the majority of us is far different.

We look to our communities, our faiths, our families for our joy, our support, in good times and bad. We prayed together, our kids played together and we always stood ready to help each other out in different ways.
And that's how it is in America. The strength and power and goodness of America has always been based on the strength and power and goodness of our communities, our families, our faiths. It is both how we live our lives and why we live our lives. We had remarkably vibrant and diverse congregants from all walks of life and many who were new to America.
In the days ahead, you will get to know Paul and Janna better. I love the way he lights up around his kids and how he's not embarrassed to show the world how much he loves his mom. But last night America got to see what I saw in Paul Ryan - a strong and caring leader who is down to earth and confident in the challenge this moment demands. He represents the best of America, a man who will always make us proud - my friend and America's next Vice-President, Paul Ryan.

Abby Richon, Hagerstown, Maryland, US
My scars and stretch marks are glorious. They remind me of my birthing stories - the joy of holding my son and then my daughter, looking into their faces for the first time, greeting them into the world and letting them know how totally in love with them I was and still am. My wonderful pregnancies.

Fey: "The Hunger Games was one of the biggest films of the year and also what I call the six weeks it took me to get into this dress."
Poehler: "Ang Lee's been nominated for Life of Pi which is what I'm going to call the six weeks after I take this dress off."
ADELE - receiving the best song award Adele is also nominated for an Oscar for the title track from the latest Bond adventure "Oh my God!

And not on America.
What is needed in our country today is not complicated or profound. It doesn't take a special government commission to tell us what America needs. In the richest country in the history of the world, this Obama economy has crushed the middle class. Not on themselves. What America needs is jobs.

"It's very strange to be here. We've been pissing ourselves laughing at all of it. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your world for a night.
"I'd like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press, I never thought I'd say that. Sony pictures; MGM; Sam Mendes; Paul Epworth, who I did the song with; Daniel Craig for being such a wonderful Bond. "Honestly, I have come out for a night out with my friend Ida - we're new mums - we've literally come for a night out.

My third pregnancy left me with a lot of excess fat but my kids make me proud - I love them to bits and would not change them for a straight model type body. Alexandra, Athens, Greece

These are American success stories. But no-one ever is in the real world of business. In America, we celebrate success, we don't apologise for it.
We weren't always successful at Bain. Is it any wonder that someone who attacks success has led the worst economic recovery since the Great Depression? And yet the centrepiece of the president's entire re-election campaign is attacking success.

It's not fat, it's a natural sign of what your body has done. I thought it would get better but after 12 years there is still all the excess skin and stretch marks. With my second pregnancy I experienced an even greater loss, as at seven months of the pregnancy the baby was diagnosed with severe problems and I was asked to terminate the pregnancy. I had a huge belly and excess skin and terribly red marks. Alison Thompson, Rossett, Wales
Before my first pregnancy I was very athletic but all of it changed when my son was born.

"In Lincoln, we see a man more interesting than the legend, and a far better guide for future presidents. We're all here tonight because he did."
JENNIFER LAWRENCE - receiving the best actress award Lawrence has also been nominated for an Oscar As Lawrence took to the stage, she read the inscription on her trophy and said: "What does it say? Every hard-fought effort to protect our union has demanded the same combination of steely resolve and necessary compromises that Lincoln mastered to preserve the union and end slavery.

The majority of us live unnatural lives - if we were all labouring on the land for our food and sustenance, there'd be no more squidgy tummies. I do think people are missing the point here - surely the point is not to worry whether we look "beautiful" or not - there are other things by which we can be valued!
And to try to insist that we all say wrinkly loose skin is "beautiful" when it's really not is patronising!

I didn't even know that it existed. The worst part is that I get disapproval from women the most. I had never seen an after-pregnancy belly with stretch marks and sags exposed. I hadn't heard about it. Continue reading the main story "Start Quote Most [people's] reactions suggest that either I am at fault, ugly or very unfortunate"
End Quote After I gave birth I was shocked.

There is too much pressure on ordinary women to look like all these stick-thin celebs, who "pop out" the baby and slip gracefully into their size eight jeans again. My body was destroyed after a C-Section. That one event has devastated not only my body - which 13 years later I still see as "butchered" - but also my self-esteem, my mental health and my relationship with my husband. Here are some of the highlights from the stage at the 2013 ceremony, including Jodie Foster's enigmatic acceptance of the lifetime achievement award.
AMY POEHLER and TINA FEY - opening monologue Fey (l) was Globe nominated for her role in 30 Rock while Poehler was nominated for Parks and Recreation Fey: "Tonight we honour the television shows that have entertained us all year, as well as the films that have only been in theatres for two days."

Afterwards I was left with a saggy crepe-like stomach and my mother and sister lamented "Oh poor you." I'd try to console myself "Well, I never liked my tummy anyway. Never wanted to wear a crop top/bikini in any event". But after my third I've got to admit, I'd sooner not have this spare tyre of loose flab that looks huge in the mirror when I'm wearing fitting clothing.

It's not bad work if you can get it, though.
"But seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you'd had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else. Some day, in the future, people will look back and remember how beautiful it once was.

Monica Gonzalez, Davie, Florida Monica Gonzalez is worried about being able to feed her family It is outrageous, the government really needs to make some changes so this doesn't happen again.
That is how we are able to have milk, cereal, bread, baby formula and eggs among other things. nI am a mother of two, we are low income and we depend on the WIC federal programme that gives healthcare and nutrition for women and small children. nWith the shutdown we are no longer receiving this help.

And what will we do once it goes? nTracey Stalcup, Murphy, North Carolina Tracey Stalcup and her husband's home loan has been delayed My husband and I are just a few weeks away from closing on our first home.
It's not fair to anybody, not just me, there are kids that are being affected, seniors, people could die because of this negligence. It is frustrating, all we can think about is, how long will our food last? nAs our loan was through a government-supported agency, the field workers who review and improve the loans will not be working during the shutdown.

I mean, thank you for the enthusiasm. single.
"Yes I am, I am single. Those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. No, I'm kidding - but I mean I'm not really kidding, but I'm kind of kidding. n"I hope that you're not disappointed that there won't be a big coming-out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age. Can I get a wolf whistle or something?

I'm slim, but my tummy, at 54, and after two children, looks a bit like the top picture.
Actresses, models... those who have the motivation to work sufficiently hard afterwards to restore their figures are the proof that it can be done. No it's not beautiful! Most women's tummies after childbirth aren't, and that is due to lack of exercise or a lack of hard physical work, and diet - simple as that. Some women's tummies are still beautiful after childbirth. But am I having sleepless nights about it, or insisting it's photographed, or that someone tells me it's "beautiful"?

If the shutdown lasts even another two weeks, my family will need to consider taking out a personal loan to finance necessaries like groceries and utilities. nWe have one other source of income, my dad's pension from the USAF (he is a veteran of the Iraqi war), but that will also be in jeopardy in a few weeks when the debate over the debt ceiling comes to a head. So, obviously, we are quite anxious that this be resolved quickly.

I am normally quite a skinny person and put on a lot of weight in pregnancy, and it took me a long time to lose it. Here is a selection of your thoughts and experiences.

"I gotta thank my agent Patrick Whitesell who was with me when I was like a nobody, then when I was somebody, then when I was in a little bit of trouble. "Look, I don't care what the award is. It's a first step, but we need something longer-lasting. I have a sister that won't benefit because she's 32. After six years of having to do car washes and fundraisers and breaking every family and friends' piggy bank, I was able to graduate [from university]. We're going to need legislation that could make sure that I have a path to citizenship and that I'm able to be a full American. I have three degrees in early childhood education, music education and special education.

Any congressman who applauds this is undermining his own constitutional function. This really is making immigration law without input from Congress. Mark Krikorian, Center for Immigration Studies I don't think it's too much to describe this as a lawless act.
The president is attempting to rule by decree and there is absolutely no excuse for this.

When my mom ran for the Senate, my dad was there for her every step of the way. My mom and dad were true partners, a life lesson that shaped me by everyday example. I can still hear her saying in her beautiful voice: 'Why should women have any less say than men, about the great decisions facing our nation?'
I wish she could have been here at the convention and heard leaders like Governor Mary Fallin, Governor Nikki Haley, Governor Susana Martinez, Senator Kelly Ayotte and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. As governor of Massachusetts, I chose a woman Lieutenant Governor, a woman chief of staff, half of my cabinet and senior officials were women, and in business, I mentored and supported great women leaders who went on to run great companies.

Blood-shaking friendships, brothers and sisters. So, a declaration that I'm a little nervous about but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now, huh Jennifer? "But now, apparently, I'm told that every celebrity is expected to honour the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. I would have to make out with Marion Cotillard or I'd have to spank Daniel Craig's bottom just to stay on the air. But please don't cry because my reality show would be so boring.

An office supply company called Staples - where I'm pleased to see the Obama campaign has been shopping; The Sports Authority, which became a favourite of my sons. Today Steel Dynamics is one of the largest steel producers in the United States.
We started an early childhood learning centre called Bright Horizons that First Lady Michelle Obama rightly praised. That business we started with 10 people has now grown into a great American success story. At a time when nobody thought we'd ever see a new steel mill built in America, we took a chance and built one in a corn field in Indiana. Some of the companies we helped start are names you know.

I remember when I was pregnant with my first, all talk from my family was of stretch marks and how if I was "lucky" I'd not get any. I consoled myself saying, "they're below my hip line, nobody will ever see them" but when I fell pregnant with my second, they spread well beyond. When I started to balloon I kept thinking, "no, I'll be fine, it's not so bad," but quickly the red angry lines started to appear. I've given birth, the stretch marks are my pregnancy badges.

We are a nation of immigrants. When that hard fought election was over, when the yard signs came down and the television commercials finally came off the air, Americans were eager to go back to work, to live our lives the way Americans always have - optimistic and positive and confident in the future.
It is what brought us to America.
That very optimism is uniquely American. We are the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the ones who wanted a better life, the driven ones, the ones who woke up at night hearing that voice telling them that life in that place called America could be better.

In the 1990s I visited the place where her skull was found. But they did not have enough evidence.

He is now serving a life sentence for the killing of Lizabeth Wilson. n"We're keeping a close eye on him," the officer said. It was a grassy area near a farmhouse in Lenexa, Kansas - desolate and quiet.

And I don't doubt for a second that Neil Armstrong's spirit is still with us: that unique blend of optimism, humility and the utter confidence that when the world needs someone to do the really big stuff, you need an American. Tonight that American flag is still there on the moon. God bless Neil Armstrong.

Also, to address comments below, people who have abortions can still have children later on if and when they choose--why can't Davis be pictured with her children as a devoted single mom in photo ops?The partial shutdown began earlier this week after Republicans refused to approve a budget, saying they would only do so if funding for President Barack Obama's healthcare reforms was delayed.
Thousands of federal employees are on enforced leave without pay, while others are working as "essential" staff, but are currently not being paid.
The impact of the shutdown is being felt across the country.

But tonight I'd ask a simple question: If you felt that excitement when you voted for Barack Obama, shouldn't you feel that way now that he's President Obama? Many of you felt that way on election day four years ago. Hope and Change had a powerful appeal.
